Theme:  Disaster Relief

A natural disaster has occurred and you are responsible for raising funds that will be used to: feed and clothe people, provide temporary housing and medical supplies, purchase machinery for rebuilding, purchase ambulance, fire trucks, etc.

Purpose:  You live in another country (outside of the U.S.A.) where a natural disaster occurred. You have seen how the Red Cross aids victims of natural disasters.  Your mission is to persuade people to donate money for Disaster Relief efforts that you are planning.  You will create a PowerPoint Presentation to show at fundraising events.  The PowerPoint Presentation will give the audience a connection to the country and people affected.

Getting Started:

Go to MS Encarta ‘99 and research a type of natural disaster such as Cyclone, Earthquake, Hurricane, Tidal Wave or Tsunami.

Next go to the International Red Cross website www.ifrc.org.  Look through and find an article about a country affected by the type of natural disaster you have chosen.  See how the Red Cross has aided and continues to aid the victims of the disaster.

Choices of recent events:

Cyclone – Orissa State, India

Earthquake - Armenia, Colombia

Earthquake - Azerbaijan, Turkey

Hurricane Mitch – Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador

Tidal Wave – Papua, New Guinea

You may use a different country/disaster only if I approve it at the time of your Encarta/Internet search.
